High Rise

It's not about how many neighbours you know of, it's about how many of them you know well.

Glasgow Housing Association plans to demolish most of its 120+ post-war high-rise residential buildings in the coming decades. This project challenges that decision, proposing a reimagined approach to these spaces to address urban loneliness and social alienation.

While the people of Glasgow are physically closer to one another than ever before, feelings of loneliness are more prevalent than ever. This project explores how housing design can foster meaningful connections by applying insights from biology, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. It critically examines how the concept of "community" has often been misused, highlighting the need for genuine social engagement in urban living.
